2-Methylpentanoic acid is colorless to slightly yellow liquid with strong pungent, unhappy acid odor. It is prepared by aldol condensation of propanal catalyzed by dilute alkali, then dehydroxylation, hydrogenation, and oxidation. It is mainly used in fragrance and flavor formulation.
